What kind of techniques do you use?
Every session and every horse is unique, always requiring a bit of spontaneous adjustment. With that in mind, I primarily use a combination of myofascial release and the Masterson Method. Myofascial release utilizes the naturally flexible properties of fascia to release pain, tension, and trigger points throughout the horse's body. The Masterson Method is a quieter and gentler technique that taps into the horse's natural ability to release tension in their own body through the slightest pressure on specific points.
Why do you use so little pressure?
I often use a minimal amount of pressure in my sessions unless I am addressing large muscle groups. This is because horses, as prey animals, have very different responses to pressure than humans do. As humans, we can rationalize the benefits behind a particularly powerful massage, but horses cannot. I try to always remain conscious of the horse's fight or flight, and stay under their radar to administer the most effective care.
Is there any aftercare involved?
I recommend that your horse has at least 24 hours to recover and resume normal work. Very light work is fine, and movement is good, but they need time for their tissues to relax and recover.
What is your recommended schedule?
Your horse will gain the most benefit from consistent monthly work, a session about every 4-6 weeks. Weekly work is available for certain cases as well, and will often yield the most noticeable results. Inconsistent work can allow time for muscles to regain old habits and undo previous progress.
